Communicating Sensitively with Children – A Guide

This document is based on the observations of Prerana’s counselor while working with children and caregivers in Child Care Institutions (CCI) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. A caregiver not only provides for a child’s necessities but also helps them develop a perception of themselves, and the world around them. However, while being responsible for this, caregivers often tend to commit some unintentional fallacies in communicating with the child.
The document has been created to help the caregivers understand how they can sensitively communicate with children by being mindful of the child’s needs and emotions. It features various communication strategies that can be used in the field. It may also provide insights into the thought processes of children and the way they perceive the world around them.

A Holistic Guide on Trauma Informed Care for Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation

Through this document, we endeavor to share our learnings from the field about the mental health needs of the victims of commercial sexual exploitation. The scope of the document specifically covers the mental health needs of a victim prior to their rescue as well as during the process of rehabilitation, while they reside in child care institutions. The aim of this document is to encourage and equip the stakeholders specifically social workers, caregivers, and other non-mental health professionals who interact with victims of commercial sexual exploitation with an understanding of the victim’s psycho-social needs along with practical suggestions on managing challenges arising from these needs.

Mental Health at Child Care Institutions during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant impact in all areas of life. While we grapple with the health and economic impact of the pandemic, its profound effect on our mental health remains under-addressed. This is especially true for children, who often remain silent victims of any calamity.
As we closely work with children residing in Child Care Institutions (CCI), we have been able to observe the pandemic’s impact on their mental health as well as the mental health of the caregivers that work closely with them. To address this and shed more light on the issue we developed a guide documenting our observations and suggestions of practical strategies that can be used.

Module: Consumer Rights

Prerana conducted some sessions on ‘Consumer Rights’ for the children who we closely work with. The sessions aimed at educating the children on their rights as consumers, and the means of redressal if the rights are infringed. The sessions were conducted for children between the age groups of 12-18 years. They can be modified to suit children/individuals of different age groups. At the end of this document, a brief note on the introduction and evolution of consumer rights is also provided.
