Just toiling hard to make ends meet is not enough. In exchange for a few morsels of food and some money, the powerful and the wealthy don’t hesitate to trade off young girls and sexually exploit them.

This is hell on earth.

About 700 km from the national capital in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region is Chitrakoot. Here, minor girls from poor tribal families are forced to work in illegal mines for survival but the contractors and middlemen don’t pay them their wages easily. These girls have to trade off their bodies in exchange for their meagre wages.

Poverty here is so entrenched that at an age when children ideally spend their time playing merrily and attending school, these girls have to shoulder their family’s responsibilities and contribute to the household income.

Aged 12-14 years, these girls work in illegal mines where their contractors and middlemen force them to sell their bodies for a meagre daily wage of Rs 200-Rs 300.

India Today TV visited Chitrakoot to unearth the unholy nexus of money and sexual torture.

Soumya (name changed), a resident of Karvi village says when they go to the mines seeking work, the contractors agree to employ them on the condition that they will also have to sell their bodies.

“We are helpless, we agree to it. Rinku’s mother says feeding the family is a daily struggle.

“We are helpless. They promise a daily wage of Rs 300-Rs 400. Sometimes they give Rs 150, sometimes Rs 200. When our children return home from work, they narrate their ordeal. But what can we do? We are labourers. We have to feed our families. My husband is ill and needs treatment,” she says.

Her husband too expresses the same helplessness borne out of poverty and State apathy.

Bindiya (name changed) is 14 and lives in Karvi village. Her father has died and every day she goes to the mines, toils hard and ekes out a living for her family.

“The contractors have put some beds behind the hill near the mines. We have been running from pillar to post to find a means to feed our family.”

There are nearly 50 stone crushers operating in the hills of Chitrakoot. Fighting the pangs of hunger and unemployment, the Kol tribe that inhabits this region has no other source of employment other than working in these mines as stone crushers.

The contractors and middlemen exploit their helplessness and sexually abuse their children. Their families say they are helpless to fight back.

The provisions on the Indian Penal Code do not reach these hills of Chitrakoot, neither do laws whose sole purpose are to protect children from sexual exploitation.

Fed up with the rampant exploitation, many women have stopped working in these mines, and also stopped sending their daughters there.

Meanwhile, reacting to India Today TV’s ground report from Chitrakoot, the district magistrate has ordered a magistrate probe into the matter. The state government too has swung into action and has promised prompt action.

Speaking to India Today TV, District Magistrate Shesh Mani Pandey said, “We take strict action whenever we receive any complaint.”

Dr Vishesh Gupta, Chairperson Uttar Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said, “We have taken note of the matter and we will send a team to investigate this.”

RS Pandey, ASP Chitrakoot, said, “We have not heard of any such incident. We are fully alert and have asked the village guards to remain vigilant and report every incident in the villages. We are gathering information.”

While the administration wakes up and promises action, a question that demands an answer is whether the local administration is really unaware of the widespread exploitation of poor minor girls right under its nose or has it tacitly allowed this hell to continue?

Read the India Today (Source) article here.

Kerala Budget Focuses on Women Safety: Proposes Public Register of Sex Offenders

“It’s Saturday evening at the National Human Trafficking Hotline, and we’ve had non-stop calls since mid-afternoon.
